My Suicide Pool Picks So Far

November 18, 2009 Craig Leave a comment

After 10 weeks, here are the teams I have counted on to keep me “alive”:

  1. Minnesota Vikings
  2. Washington Redskins
  3. New York Giants
  4. Indianapolis Colts
  5. Philadelphia Eagles
  6. Pittsburgh Steelers
  7. New England Patriots
  8. Dallas Cowboys
  9. New Orleans Saints
  10. Baltimore Ravens

In week 10, there was also a “roadblock game”, which basically means you have to pick a very tough game as determined by the guy running the league in order to try to thin the number or contestants still remaining.  They chose the Patrio/Colts game, and I went with the undefeated Colts.  Luckily, Peyton had my back and squeezed out a 35-34 win in the last seconds (literally).

I have to confess, getting this far wasn’t that hard, and it shouldn’t be for anyone with a little big of football knowledge.  The real test is at the end of the season, when you’ve used all the good teams and you have to start taking some chances.  I have 7 more weeks to survive, and in my opinion there are only a few good teams left.  What that means is I’ll have to eventually pick some games that are either very closely matched or even an upset or two.  This is the first year I’m doing this, and I don’t have any delusions of winning.  But, I’m still proud of getting this far and I guess it’s possible to get lucky a few times and see what happens.  The teams left that I consider to be decent are:

  • Arizona Cardinals
  • Denver Broncos
  • San Diego Chargers
  • Green Bay Packers

I wouldn’t exactly say they are worthy of being counted on to win any given week, but I will most likely have to depend on them at some point in the rest of this season if I’m going to have a chance.

Anyone else in a suicide pool?  Let me know what teams you had and are still holding on to for later in the year, as well as what kind of pool you are in.  And good luck (unless you’re in mine)!

In the neighborhood

215 Sports is a great Philly Sports Blog I just stumbled upon that follows the same template of this site – report on all things sports-related in Philly.  Yet while I stick more to editorials and opinions, they are more about news updates and trade rumors.  So check them out and let me know what you think!

New widget

I wanted a way to add short posts to this site without getting in the way of the content, so I thought a widget would work well because it would be off to the site.  There is a social networking site I heard about called “Status“, which allows people with a common interest to post Twitter-like updates to a common thread. Read more…

New and Improved

August 7, 2008 Craig Leave a comment

I have added a few new features to the site to make it more readable, to help you find specific content faster, and hopefully be more interesting.  I’m always looking for new improvements, so feel free to make suggestions.

  • New Title – I used to have the “4 for 4″ in the tagline, but there isn’t one for this theme
  • Categories for each team (Eagles, Flyers, Phillies, Sixers) and “Other” for posts like this
  • A “Keep Reading” tag, so you can scroll through articles faster and see more per page (for posts more than two paragraphs)
  • Photos – breaks up the text and gives you an immediate context of the content
  • Recent Comments – moved up above links, now that I have some!
  • A Contact Page to send me an email if you don’t want to post a comment

Now that you can search through articles by a specific team, how do you rank them?  Here’s mine:

  1. Phillies – I played baseball the most and it was the first sport I really got into watching as well; also went to a ton of games with my dad as a kid – I grew up at the Vet
  2. Eagles – This is a football town, and football has all the elements for a great story (played 1 year as offensive right tackle)
  3. Sixers – Grew up going to some games with my dad, followed in his footsteps
  4. Flyers – Will root for them in the playoffs, but never played it and don’t like watching on TV

Cheesesteak of Suffering

If you have a Mac, why not add this widget? You get 4 styles to choose from, and now you can literally know, up to the second, how long it has been since we’ve had a championship in this town.

This is where we are as of this post :(
